Reading (and Listening)

I like to read but often found it hard to squeeze in the time. Now I have found the perfect solution - don't own a television! It really works. I now read rather a lot and am pleased to report that I now own a bookcase of books that I have read, rather than ones that I hope to read one day... if I have the time... if there's nothing on the box...

The Internet of course has more out there to read than anyone knows what to do with, but it all gets read by someone eventually - you're reading this after all! Although it hasn't quite matched paper for reading comfort, I do admit to browsing the newspapers fairly regularly on the Internet. Here are a few of the ones I scan more often than others:

Begin local...

• My home community website, Twickenham Online.
• My local newspaper, the Richmond and Twickenham Times.

Elsewhere in Britain:

• Sometimes I buy The Guardian.
• And sometimes I buy The Independent.
• I never by the real thing, but one of the first newspapers to go online was The Electronic Telegraph.
• Edinburgh's mouthpiece: The Scotsman.
• Glasgow's mouthpiece: The Herald.
• Sometimes good for a laugh: The Record-Mail.

Rather further away...

• I only very occasionally buy The Australian.
• Adelaide's own is The Advertiser.
• Global citizens might like to check the other viewpoint: The New York Times.
• Of course all true global citizens also read: The Star.

Some of the best websites on the Internet of course belong to national broadcasters:

• The BBC probably maintains one of the best websites on the Internet.
• Although normally you would stare vacantly at it, you can in fact read the news from CNN.
• Australia's national broadcaster is the ABC.

But as we don't own a TV, we spend quite a lot of time listening to the radio:

• Our default is Five Live.
• When I lived in Belgium I tuned into the BBC World Service.
• In Australia (and on the Internet) I liked TripleJ.

Other things:

• Snippets of interesting science news: Science Daily.
• A rattling good read: New Scientist.
• More looking at news rather than reading can be done by surfing the photo archive at CORBIS.
• General reference sites on the web have supposedly been assembled at EBlast, although I haven't had a chance to work out if this is a useful site or not.
• Just in case anything you read really confused you, I found this really nice site that explains the foibles of American v British English.
