MSc in Information Security - Block Mode
The Information Security Group (ISG) first offered the opportunity for part-time and CPD students to study the taught modules of the Royal Holloway University of London postgraduate MSc in Information Security by attending one week (5 day) courses in the academic year 2006/07. This block mode of delivery is an alternative to the existing traditional delivery mode for part-time students of one day per week (in each 11 week teaching term) which continues to be available.
Two cohorts of part-time students who attended this mode of delivery have now completed their degree programme and have graduated along with the other MSc in Information Security students at the annual Graduation Ceremony in the Founders Building.
For the 2011/12 academic year two MSc core modules, Security Management and Introduction to Cryptography and Security Mechanisms, as well as three option modules, Database Security, Software Security and Standards and Evaluation Criteria, will be available in Block Mode delivery. The remaining two core modules, Network Security and Computer Security, and further option modules, will be available in the 2012/13 academic year.
Part-time students may join the MSc in Information Security programme on Block Mode delivery any time before the delivery of the first core course Introduction to Cryptography and Security Mechanisms (31 October 2011). Applicants should apply on-line via the Admissions Office. Choose ‘Part-time’ as mode of study and write ‘Block Mode Delivery’ in the Research Area text box. As well as submitting the application on-line, please preview and produce a pdf of the first page of your application and send it directly to the ISG Administrator, Emma Mosley on emma.mosley [at] rhul [dot] ac [dot] uk
The block mode modules may also interest professionals wishing to deepen their understanding in the Information Security field. The ISG is also able to offer block mode courses as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses. Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance but may also choose to register for the examination. CPD Students who follow the programme of the MSc and take the examinations over a seven year period may qualify for the award of the degree.
Those interested in becoming CPD students without taking the examination should contact Emma Mosley, ISG Administrator, on emma.mosley [at] rhul [dot] ac [dot] uk to express interest.
Those who wish to register for the examinations should apply on-line via the Admissions Office. Choose ‘Part-time’ as mode of study and write ‘CPD Block Mode’ in the Research Area text box with a list of the course codes IY5xxx of the modules you wish to attend in the 2010/11 session. (See below for a list of the available modules.) As well as submitting the application on-line, please preview and produce a pdf of the first page of your application and send it directly to Emma Mosley. The fee for individual modules taken by CPD students is currently in the range of £1100-£1600, but are currently being reviewed.
Students are able to mix and match the two modes of delivery (traditional and block modes) if they wish. However, to avoid timetable clashes students will have to attend only block mode delivery or only traditional delivery within any one term. All students sit the same examinations during the normal university examination term. There is no difference between the degrees awarded to students studying by block mode and traditional delivery. Places on the block mode delivery may be limited.
