July 14 1998 | Victory! A full 6 points clear of second place! |
(Admittedly we had Andrew Sheer on the team that night) | |
July 28 1998 | Victory! Score was a mere 15 points out of 30 |
Still tied after the first tie-breaker question | |
Won the 2nd tie-breaker | |
August 11 1998 | Shameful. We didn't place. Nevermind. |
August 18 | Embarrassing again. We got 12 out of 30 in a tough quiz. |
But the winners got 17. The mis-spelled Ferilla question reappeared! | |
September 29 1998 | Third place with 21 points. |
October 6 1998 | Third place with 17 points. |
October 13 1998 | Victory! With a dubious score of 20 points. |
October 21 1998 | Our finest victory yet! See the section on "Paul Dando's Farewell Party" below. |
November 17 1998 | Victory! Our score of 22 points was a full 5 points ahead of the opposition. |
November 24 1998 | 3rd place. The team consisted of only Andrew Sheer and Alex Dent. |
The two clever so-and-sos went on to win the snowball of a full 90 pounds! | |
December 1 1998 | We were first equal with 20 points, but we lost the tie-breaker and so came second. |
December 8 1998 | A very tough quiz. We came 3rd but for some reason were not awarded any prize. |
January 12 1999 | With a bumper team of 10 (including a rare appearance by Sean Murphy) we came first equal |
with a score of 22 points. We won the tie-breaker and so the spoils of victory were ours. | |
January 19 1999 | A poor and unplacing score of 13 (just to prove that I don't only record the good scores!) |
January 26 1999 | Utterly stupendous V I C T O R Y with a score of 29 out of 30. |
And it should have been 30/30 since Brian Wallace had given the correct | |
answer of "The Hollies" to number 21. | |
Admittedly, the quiz was much easier than usual due to popular demand . . . | |
February 9 1999 | The quiz is much easier these days. We scored 25 points out of 30 but the winners |
got 28 and we were only 3rd equal. | |
The snowball is still hard though. We got zilch. | |
February 16 1999 | With 23 points we came first equal with two other teams. |
We got the worst answer for the tie-breaker so were awarded third place. | |
February 23 1999 | We scored 22 which was well behind the winning score of 26. C'est la vie. |
March 9 1999 | We scored a disappointing 14 and a half, while The Fossils got 26! |
Less said the better. | |
March 16 1999 | We came third with a score of 25 despite getting a few quite tricky questions. |
---------------------------------------------------- | |
Careful readers will observe that we haven't been out to the quiz for a while. | |
This is partly because I am currently in Ipswich. | |
---------------------------------------------------- | |
June 29 1999 | I actually went to a quiz! We didn't get a very good score. |
July 13 1999 | We came first equal with 22 points and won the tie breaker. The tie breaking |
question was: What is the average weight of an eyeball? | |
ANSWER: 7gm, and we guessed 8gm. Prize money: 27 pounds. | |
August 3 1999 | An excellent V I C T O R Y with a score of 26. |
We were a full 4 points ahead of rivals ``The Fossils''. | |
Furthermore, we were very close to winning the snowball. But we missed out. | |
September 7 1999 | My F I N A L quiz. This is the end of the quiz web page! |
We scored 21 points which was not among the top 3. It was a tough quiz, with | |
questions appearing in strangely chiming couplets. | |
An ignominious end to a long-standing tradition. |
Paul Dando has been the star of our quiz team on numerous occasions. Sadly, he has chosen the sun-seekers path, and will be heading to Los Angeles next week. His knowledge of obscure sporting results will be sadly missed.
For his final quiz we decided to honour him by dropping the usual team name of "Freeth's Nephroid" and using the celebratory monicker of "Paul Dando's Farewell Party". Present in the team were Paul, Simon, Andrew Sheer, Alex Dent, Brian Wallace and myself. It was a tough quiz, but we were feeling confident and doing well.
The way the marking of the quiz works is that the answer sheets are swapped and marked by another team. Then they are returned and the publican counts down from 30. When your number is called you cheer to indicate that your team scored that number. Now, the winning score is usually around 19 to 23, so instead of starting at 30 and counting down the publican usually starts at 25 and counts down. We had the glorious and improbably high score of 25. When the publican asked "Anyone with 25?", our victorious cheer was following by a stunned and disbelieving silence from the entire pub. It was a satisfying moment.
Anyway, we were declared the winners and there were further cheers when the publican announced the name of our team to the pub. This was surely the most enjoyable quiz yet.
All the best Paul!
